This resume’ is not up to date because I do Security now. Either way what’s bugging me today is that the below is a copy of an ad from Indeed.com for a paralegal job. Most of these ads are given with a “Agency” like “Robert Half.” So this means that it’s in Chicago, downtown, and I don’t want to go that far for an ad agency interview when the job is 10 minutes from my house. Then, they want “experience” yes 2-5 years of experience. I graduated in 2009, and no attorney will give me the time of day. I have tried everything. This is pure bull-shit! Anyone who knows “the real me” knows that I have a passion for law, and if I won the lottery I’d attend law school. On another note: I interview all the time just for fun. I can honestly say that I met an attorney that “I KNEW more than he did.” Well, I can do ALL the typing and office work, Westlaw, Lexis Nexis, and research. I can research anything for case law. But they do not give me a chance, and we all need to train on the job, because each office is different. Oh is this bugging me today.
Ok, there you have it all. What are your thoughts?
PS> I went to McDonald’s and brought home a BIG MAC and guess what’s bugging me today? I hate all the lettuce on the burger, they should just leave it off, it all falls off onto my stomach anyhow. :)

I feel better now that I put this in writing out into the public.
I can understand why that would bug you. I live in a smaller city that doesn’t have that many job opportunities and I want to do secretarial work but most places want you to have at least 2 years of experience AS one already. The problem is there’s no place to get that experience as one already if no one will hire you and train you. I think I am a fast learner, I can type fast, I know my way around a computer….I took a few computer classes in college even though I was a Theatre major….just for fun and I aced them all.
Ugh…anyways…I can understand that it’s frustrating and you have so many skills, it looks like you are more than qualified enough. I wish I had advice for you….
Hey Sharon - you are right on! Jobs want us to have two years experience out of college. Yes, No one will train you either. All jobs have some type of training. I am so mad. Maybe it’s my mood. Join in this…it’s free…so far… I am in it…I love it so far i two days: http://www.toplevelposition.com/jackiepaulson
It’s free~ Jackie your blogging buddy.
Hi Jackie,
You need to find one or two headhunters in your area. You must go in and meet them face-to-face. Then if there is rapport, you tell them that you are going to register with just one other headhunter. That’s it. Don’t spread yourself too thin. They won’t to a good job for you if you are registered with everybody in the marketplace.
Let the Acct. Exec. advise you on your resume. Find someone who knows the paralegal specialty. Stay away from the big boys because you are short on Para-legal experience and all those job-specs are set in stone if the client is going to pay a fee. FYI the fee is your big obstacle; not the experience. He/she will coach you on the key points of the first interview. Keep in mine the agency earns from 20/30% of your first years income for placing you.
Clients don’t pay out that kind of money for the candidate to be off spec period!
Remember lawyers are cheap, and they don’t like to pay agency fees. The best way to find what you want is to network. Other lawyers will know when their associates have needs. That is your best bet! Personally, I wouldn’t go near an agency, but the way I suggest, is the best way to go about it if you choose that route.
Networking is always the best and fastest choice.
Bien suerte! Charlie
Thanks Charlie, can you pray about it for me. I agree, I don’t want to go to the Agency’s. You give great advice, and know your way around the WWW. You are a true friend, Charlie. BTW< my dad is okay but getting tests done. Will keep you posted. Jackie
It sounds like you have a battle you have ahead of you. This isn’t an easy environment in which to find a job, that’s for sure. Good Luck!
At least you have a good head on your shoulders.
Hi Jackie,
First of all, thanks for stopping by my blog and subscribing…I hope you enjoy my posts.
I had to come by and see who you are…I know you comment of Eliz of Mirth and Motivation alot.
I so agree with you…how frustrating. We often see this in doctor’s offices and hospitals as well…the nurses are knowledgeable AND caring and often do a better job of diagnosis…definitely a better job of making the patient feel valued.
Sorry you have to deal with this…but don’t give up…you sound quite competent…the right job will appear, have no doubt!
By the way, my son and his wife (and also my sister and two of her sons and their families) live in Chicago…I’ll be visiting in May…Chicago is a great city…but I don’t like the weather.
That sucks!!! As plain as that…i think our whole hiring system is wrong… And these ads companies that doesn’t know the first thing about the jobs they advertise…really irritating…
I agree that the “hiring” system “sucks.” They don’t think outside the box and that is what I need to do here. Hey, thanks for all of the helpful advice. I will be letting you know what I am doing. Cuz I think outside the box…for example, I was thinking for finding an attorney to work for, sending him balloons, or something to stand out and ask, please call me for an interview…howz that grab ya????
Jackie,
Put your energy into the jobs that will appreciate your varied skills and know that your designated job is coming. There are jobs out there and with 14 million people searching, it will take a minute… Don’t despair…
Have a blessed day!
