Would you ever get a tattoo?
Topic #207:
Would you ever get a tattoo? No I do not have one.
If you don’t have one, why or why not would you ever consider getting one?
According to one survey, 36% of American’s aged 18-29 have tattoos, the highest number in history.
My answer is simple and I do not judge others for getting them, I love Art. My main concern is the INK and what it does to the body in the long run. I have to assume that it goes into the skin and cannot be “a good thing” but that is my opinion.
Please do not get mad at me for my belief’s as I see many of the comments do love tattoo’s.
Question: “What does the Bible say about tattoos / body piercings?”
Answer: The Old Testament law commanded the Israelites, “Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the LORD” (Leviticus 19:28). So, even though believers today are not under the Old Testament law (Romans 10:4; Galatians 3:23-25; Ephesians 2:15), the fact that there was a command against tattoos should raise some questions. The New Testament does not say anything about whether or not a believer should get a tattoo.
In relation to tattoos and body piercings, a good test is to determine whether we can honestly, in good conscience, ask God to bless and use that particular activity for His own good purposes. “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31). The New Testament does not command against tattoos or body piercings, but it also does not give us any reason to believe God would have us get tattoos or body piercings.
An important scriptural principle on issues the Bible does not specifically address is if there is room for doubt whether it pleases God, then it is best not to engage in that activity. Romans 14:23 reminds us that anything that does not come from faith is sin. We need to remember that our bodies, as well as our souls, have been redeemed and belong to God. Although 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 does not directly apply to tattoos or body piercings, it does give us a principle: “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.” This great truth should have a real bearing on what we do and where we go with our bodies. If our bodies belong to God, we should make sure we have His clear “permission” before we “mark them up” with tattoos or body piercings.
Miley Cyrus Gay Rights Tattoo On Finger (PHOTO)

Miley Cyrus has some new ink, and it’s making more than a fashion statement.
On Friday night, the former “Hannah Montana” star tweeted a photo of a new tattoo, a small equal sign on the side of her ring finger. With the photo, Cyrus wrote, “All LOVE is equal.”
In response to a fan’s tweet disagreeing her stance, she wrote, “where does it say in the bible to judge others? Oh right. It doesn’t. GOD is the only judge honey. ‘GOD is love.’”
Cyrus has been outspoken in her support for gay rights; in 2009, after Carrie Prejean told Perez Hilton during the Miss USA contest that she did not believe in gay marriage, Cyrus tweeted, “Jesus loves you and your partner and wants you to know how much he cares! That’s like a daddy not loving his lil boy cuz he’s gay and that is wrong and very sad! Like I said everyone deserves to be happy. I am a Christian and I love you — gay or not. Because you are no different that anyone else! We are all God’s children!”
Back in 2009, Cyrus unveiled a tattoo that said, “Just Breathe,” in honor of a friend who died of cystic fibrosis.

I have no problems with tattoos and people getting them. I, personally, would never get a tattoo cause there’s just no interest or desire for me to…..I could never picture one on me, I think it would just look tacky. They are just not for me, but if others want them, then that’s their choice and fine with me!

I heard it’s painful… plus it’s permanent. Not for me!

They’re definitely not for me. I HATE needles of any kind, so I’d never subject myself to thousands of needle pricks! But I do believe it’s a personal choice, and I’ve seen many examples of incredible body art. As long as it’s not on me, I’m fine with it.

I feel no obligation as a contemporary Christian to apply OT law in my life in any way. Paul instructed that it would no longer be necessary to follow the Law and in fact it blocked the real spiritualism and loving fellowship which is more important. Perhaps the issue should not focus around tattoo markings. Perhaps the admonitions has meaning in that they remind us not to “stain” ourselves with sin and harmful acts to ourselves and others.

Carl-you do have a good point I did not think of. The OT Law: we are not bound to and yes I think I agree that ” Perhaps the admonitions has meaning in that they remind us not to “stain” ourselves with sin and harmful acts to ourselves and others.” Well stated and thought out. Thank you for that wonderful way of putting words into well meaning observations.

I agree that personal choice is up to the person. Thanks for your comment.
